Does the percentages from laboratories/ alcehemies apply to the points accumulated from SE's? If not, is there any point in building alchs/labs??

SE are your full automatic Diamond Mines. No need to login and invest, no they are on automode and will do it for you! Labs/alchs work the same for every race, and increase your base bonus%. They do not increase the amount you can invest or have invest, they only increase the bonus.
Lets say your imps would look like this (kind, bonus, total amount invested): Banking 10% 1,000,000
It would look like this after 10% alchs: Banking 12,5% 1,000,000
I hope this helps.

At approx what point in the round is it worthwhile to start building SE?

ASAP - as soon as you settle down and stop attacking OOP waves. Logically, the longer you keep SE'saround, the better they'll pay off.

Well, the answer is then, ASAP after you stop training military for additional OOP hits. You might want to max out your econ first, and then train the SEs, but quite frankly, it's very round dependent on how much offense is flowing around. You might want to through them up quicker for emergency defence.
Two main school of thoughts are - train the amount of SEs you need for the round in one go (anywhere between 8k-12k depending on who you ask) or separate them into 2-3 batches and train military for grabs in between so you don't fall too behind on land. *shruGs* again, preference.

Two rounds ago when Joel and I came 2nd & 3rd with Elves we went for the full train of 7-8k starting at 800 acres and finishing at 1000 acres (approximately).
For a round this long you would be looking at a MAX of 10k SE, but only if you complete them within the first week and a half. If you want to keep grabbing and stay in touch with the top, training in batches, feel free, but realise you will probably need more.
Of course, if you realm is ghetto and no one is investing in realm imps (I.E. you cap realm early) then you wont need anywhere near as many as that. 7k would be heaps.
