Weren't woodland rangers 2200 gold before? And with dark elves, shouldn't the defence elite be trained from the defence spec, and same with offence?

You're saying that, I would have to mass train the defensive specs, then attack with them, leaving myself under-defended to gain my defense elite?

And no, I don't remember WR being so cheap.

Yes, you would have to do that. And 2200 gold isn't exactly "so cheap" It's still about 250 gold per attack and defence. I tried to look at the guide from then but it was unavailable. And 2700 is redicilously expensive. And I know somebody will say they're supposed to be retrained, not trained. But nobody plays expirience with elves, and nobody who's playing land will normal attack once they reach 1000 land.

Um, actually, ask most of the people on these forums and they'll say you should normal attack for most, if not all of your attacks.

What do you do with the Highlands and Mountains. You can't use them or convert them?

Yeah, you can convert mountains/highlands to something useful? Make sure you have md and workers.
Unless I've misunderstood you?

With elves you run specs until you get 900 acres or so. Then you sit and switch over to AoL. Then you sit and train 7.5-9k SE. Then you start attacking to gain land, attacking every 12 hrs when possible (normal attack only).

You can use spells to convert mountains to highlands and vise versa but cannot convert to anything useful. Therefore i currently have loads of unusable barren land.
Is this how elves will play, am i missing something?

You can convert highlands into lots of other stuff...you could move land around from any type to any other type, if you work the spells and rezoning right.

EDIT

Oh and Simon, you only want to make one conquest the entire round, and that is your very last attack. The casualty rates are too high with conquest to do it any other time, because it hurts so much with troop losses. There are rare cases when you want to make a CQ another time, but for the mid to mid-upper echelon player these cases don't really apply. For low echelon players, they are mostly noobs and conquest whenever they get mad or reach over 1k land. For upper echelon, occasionally a conquest will be made on a war hit for a retal or to slow down competition and maybe overpop someone, etc. The average player isn't generally going to have to try and slow down a runaway :P

Dark Elfs:

First, if you use the sacrifice route or the spell to "train" your defense, you would end up losing alot of defense in order to train your elites if your d. elites came from your d. lessers. If they come from your a. lessers then that isn't as much of an issue.

Second, you are less likely to get d. elites if they train from d. lessers because very few people are willing to send the d. lessers into battle so training them that way isn't as usefull because it would only work when you where succussfully attacked.

Third, the ability to automatically gain more defense after you make a grab is usefull. Attack with your lesser attackers and when the land comes in some of their casualties are now d. elites. Getting some attack power back isn't quite as usefull in that situation.

this is not a have to either. the round 2 rounds ago. Me and scarlo went with all SR for oop, even if i screwed mine up. and obviously we were in the best position mid round while screwing up. However its recommended to go HE i suppose. Even if i'd go SR late oop if i ever played them again.. Which aint happening, since they are really boring:)
