I'll give this a go, but would prefer someone to help me with deck selection, since I'm more or less a Magic virgin...

What type of deck do you want to play and are you familiar with any one particular magic set?

In my pokemon days I prefered the haymaker type, and I don't really have very much magic experience at all.

Haymaker type? What does that mean? Is that an aggro deck or a deck that tries to win in big move or what?

Izzy - if you are after some simpler decks to help you learn as you play I would suggest one of the following:
Mirrodin - Little Bashers - this is commonly reffered to as a "white weenie" deck. It has lots of small creatures and equipment to make them stronger. It tries to win by getting small creatures out early and killing the opponent before their bigger, stronger stuff comes along. Being one color should make it easy to play.
Scouge - Goblin Mob - similar to Little Bashers but a red deck with lots of little goblins. Rather than equipment to make the little guys bigger later in the game this deck uses spells that deal damage directly to either deal the last few points to the opponent, or clear away their creatures.
Legions - Zombies Unleashed - A black creature based deck whose creatures are a bit bigger than the weenie decks above.
Mirrodin - Wicked Big - King of the BIG creatures. A green deck.
Betrayers - Rats Nest - A medium sized black creaure deck, this deck includes the second best equipment ever printed (the other one is banned) in Umezawa's Jitte
Ravnica - Selesnya Intrigues - This deck is fun if you would rather have LOTS of small guys rather than a few big guys. It is green & white.

Id probably suggest Goblin Mob as the best of the above. You can take your extra boosters out of Legions and Onslaught to get lots of other good goblins too.

I'd like to join in, though I won't be able to start playing until after the weekend, as I won't be around.
The deck I'd like to use is Spirit Flames, from the Saviours of Kamigawa set.
slightly belated edit - I get one booster from each set in the Kamigawa block, if I understand this right? If so, do I do the draw at my end or will they be given to me? Also, would I need to announce what I gain? Thanks.

Izzy: You also might want to consider Boros (Ravnica) or Orzhov (Guildpact). Boros plays straight foward aggressive and Orzhov has some nice control elements while still being aggresive.
Cen: You start off with your chosen precon deck. After you play 10 matches, then you get one booster of your choice. Everybody's card list is out in the open (including what you get in your boosters), but you don't need to say what is in your deck. Eventually I am thinking that perhaps people might be allowed to have two decks for variety, but for right now everybody is restricted to one pile of cards.

Allright, I guess I misread the rules slightly. I'm back and settled now, so if you don't mind I'd like to be entered in ^^

Sure, just post what deck you are going to be using. Post in the other thread a list of what cards are currently in your collection and start playing people. If you want, we can play each other on workstation. My game with Bairdsy is being conducted with real cards so I can play two games at once for the time being.

Workstation is fine, but if you prefer to play via the forum that's fine too
