I'm new to the game, and I was curious about the value of spires. I've read through a few strategy threads, but I didn't see spires mentioned. I could see them being a useful deterrent against attack (little or no intel about a target would make me hesitant to commit any troops), but I wonder if I would be better off rezoning the land into something more useful like mines, homes or taverns and counting on higher defense numbers instead of deterrence.
I guess the real question is do most players use farsight and spies before they attack? I know in Mythos (almost identical to elveron) the average player didn't bother, judging by the number of unsuccessful attacks on my kingdom there.
I'd like to hear what some of you veterans have to say before I commit any serious resources to building spires.

Don't use them. Ever. Don't even think about using them until you've gotten really good at the game and begin to understand why you wouldn't want to use them.

To say a few things, spires are used by mage and spy whores They do have a purpose. If you intend to do well, however, don't use them.
If you want to do well, you will use farsight and spies. And Izzy's defense calculator, available in a sticky in the Game Talk forum. Welcome to Legends of Elveron.

One final thing, if you have any more questions that you want answered quickly, you can go to the irc chat. The link is available on the front page.

Triple posts ftw. :)
I agree with ID btw. Spires are a very bad building in most circumstances. Though they reflect an op or two, whoever wants to invade you will continue trying to get ops til he succeeds more often than not. Personally I get so annoyed with spires users that I go out of my way to hit them.
Instead of making them, I suggest rezoning the land and making homes or diamond mines. Either of these will make your kingdom stronger in the long run, which will be a much more powerful deterrent than having some ops getting reflected some of the time.

Yeah, I rezoned all of my tundra, and I spent the land on building more homes.

Mythos. I think I've played that game. You choose lesser deities (or something) instead of races, no?
Unless I'm just way out of line here, I think I played a round or two. But I had no one to play with there, so it got boring -_-
(For the record, this post has no real point)

why isn't there anything to try and balance buildings...
I mean... why bother having such a pointless building?
I think the spies element could be incorperated into the courthouse (to a lesser extent, much lower) and I don't know....
Just seems stupid to leave it in

Um, yeah. I've tried to suggest a change to that fucking building twice. I've given up but you can try yourself. And I agree. It's retarded and it's superfluous code.

There are plenty of reasons to build them =P
1) You're getting the shit FB'ed out of you. There is a breakpoint where building spires > training mages.
2) You're the one doing the FB'ing. See above.
3) You're terranoid or possibly even dorf. You would like GQs to mass train workers since you gained an enormous amount of pop and would like to convert the pez -> workers. However, some fuckers decided to already war you. Spire time!
4) Build 1 Spire, Ripp-style, to piss the hell out of your opponents. If they're anal, perhaps you can incite a suicide (which will fail) on you, and then grab free land!
5) You ran away as Goblin and you want to give the rest of the playerbase a modicum of hope. Plus, it makes getting ops on you a bitch, and hopefully #4 occurs.

Build either 1 spire or max them out at 18%--particularly if you are building a lot of wizards and spies. Your enemies will have a devil of a time getting ops on you.
Just make sure you have enough defense to back it up. If you max your spires it might take the effort of an entire realm to break you for ops, and they may be so honked off they will hit you with a big mallet.
If you are an explorer and build nothing but defense anyway, by all means max those spires. If and when they break through, you can laugh at their frustration at being too big to attack anyway. And all those ops attempts did not get used on your realmies!
(Also, if they try to steal or kidnap from you, they'll steal from themselves. Hee-hee!)
