The 9th edition sealed tournament has stalled a little while Izzy is MIA and in the meantime RAVNICA has come out. This set looks really cool, based around four 2-colour guilds.

So who would like to play a sealed deck tournament from Ravnica?

Rules will be as follows:
- Once all players are signed up, a card pool of 90 cards will be pm'ed to each player
- This is equivalent to 1 starter and 3 boosters of Ravnica (usually 1 and 2, but its a new set so Im feeling generous )
- Each player must build a deck of no less than 40 cards (including land), using only cards from their card pool, plus as many basic lands as they like
- tournament will be 4 rounds of swiss, followed by a final between top 2 players
- matches will be 1 game
- decks cannot be altered between matches

Im hoping we will get 8 players, so sign up now in this thread.

Code:

I'm in. This expansion looks pretty cool from what I have read and I have already read the novel for it.

One more interested player would be nice, then we can have 2 groups of 4 playing round robin (3 rounds) with the winner from each group squaring off in a final.

Let's see if I understand how round robin works. Each player plays once against every other player in the group and the winner is the player who wins the most times, right? What happens if three of the players each win twice (three players have a rock-paper-scissors situation and the other player loses all games)?

I quote the great wisdom of Trey Parker and Matt Stone from Baseketball.
Quote:
And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, the two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

i.e. We will work it out if and when it happens. My guess is that those tied will play a knockout match or something similar.

Do I understand right that the 'knockout round' would be a three-player game? That would be a very good idea, since it would be impossible to have a four-way tie in the round robin game (unless a few MtG rounds are ties) and a three-player game is almost guaranteed to have a clear winner.
So there's the solution.

Well... it looks like we are going to stall at 7 players, so my round robin idea isnt going to work. 6 rounds is too many and we dont have an even number to split into 2 groups.

What I suggest is the following:
3 or 4 rounds of "Swiss" followed by a final between the top 2 players

Swiss is similar to round robin except that you will not play against every other player. What will happen is this:
- for the first round pairings are done at random.
- 1 player will have a bye - this counts as a win for that player
- in the second round, people who won the first round will paired against others that won the first round wherever possible, and those that lost vs others that lost etc.
- in future rounds pairings are done between players with similar win/loss ratios wherever possible.

So would people perfer 3 or 4 rounds?

I'd prefer 4 games but don't mind either way
