These games focus for the main part on making the right decision at the right time. Games of this genre will generally take one of two forms, turn based strategy and real time strategy. Turn based games are split into player turns. Each player will take their go and make their actions in a sequence, akin to a normal board game. Sometimes there will be additional time limits on the turns. In real time strategy games, actions are performed simultaneously, and, surprisingly enough, in real time.
These games involve taking over the persona of a character invented in one of three ways:
As your own invention
A creation of a third party
A combination of the two, where you create the character, but the role is already prescribed for you by a third party. This is the more common form.
The game world may be a free world, as is common in big multiplayer games such as world of warcraft and everquest, however, the more solo orientated games will instead have a story that you work along, such as oblivion or guildwars. The advantage of the free world is that it can be used for far more sociable activities rather than jus playing the game, and the sense of community is one of the biggest attractions of these huge games.
A game played over the the Internet with other people across the world. They can be in any format possible, from a simple looking text based game such as Legends of Elveron, to a full 3D first person shooter such as Counterstike: Source. The community is often an important part of these games, as it allows you to make friends and organise events both in game and in the real world
plus sharing knowledge about the game as in discussion forums. The number of people you play with can be a small as one in a co-operative mode of play, or millions in the big MMORPG.
A game of this type is played in the browser window. It could be a relatively simple game, that requires no additional downloads, and is played purely through the browser interface, or might require a small third party program to run in the browser, such as flash or java based games.
